FASCIAL STRETCH THERAPY / SPORTS MASSAGE

WHAT IS FASCIAL STRETCH THERAPY (FST)?

Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST) is a method of assisted table-based stretching that targets connective tissue and joint capsules. It is kind of like doing yoga as you relax on the table - while stretching you, I guide your breathe as you gently contract and relax your muscles. As with all manual therapy, it works mainly via the nervous system, where touching, mobilizing joints, contracting muscles, and stretching  stimulates the nerves to send signals to increase relaxation, reduce pain, and  enhance range of motion.

Lower Body: Please note that if you are looking for focused FST on your lower body (hips and legs) you should book a dedicated FST / Sports Massage treatment, as most of the lower body techniques are challenging to do with sheets.

Upper Body: I may incorporate some upper body (back, shoulders, and neck) FST into a regular massage treatment; otherwise, it can be included as part of a dedicated FST /Sports Massage treatment.

WHAT DOES AN FST / SPORTS MASSAGE TREATMENT LOOK LIKE?

Depending on your issues and preferences, an FST / Sports Massage treatment can be FST only, or can include massage and/or contemporary medical acupuncture as well.

This treatment option is recommended if you:

  • prefer to be a more active participant in your care,

  • are looking for a more targeted approach to an injury or area of chronic pain (particularly if it is in your hips and legs), and

  • are less intent on passive relaxation as the primary goal (although it will still be relaxing).

How else is a FST / Sports Massage treatment different from a regular massage therapy appointment?

  • Instead of being draped by sheets, you’ll wear stretchy shorts and a tank top,

  • Lotion may or may not be used,

  • You will sometimes be asked to move and contract your muscles while being stretched and massaged, such as with Soft Tissue Release (a technique  similar to Active Release Techniques (ART), where I apply pressure to specific muscle groups while guiding you to move through your maximum range of motion)

  • You may need to change positions a number of times throughout the appointment to facilitate the use of a range of techniques, and

  • Comfortable straps are used during stretching to stabilize your legs.
